Dentistry interview questions, and how to answer them

The questions dental schools ask most, with a way into each one.

Dental interviews test your motivation, your understanding of the profession, your ethical reasoning, how you communicate with patients, and, often, how you approach fine manual work. Here are the questions that come up most, with a way into each.

“Why dentistry and not medicine?”

The interviewer wants to know you have chosen dentistry for its own sake. Talk about what is specific to it: the mix of clinical reasoning and practical skill, continuity of care with patients, the focus on prevention, and leading a team. Back it with something you saw on work experience.

Manual dexterity questions

Expect either a practical task or questions like “What do you do that shows good manual dexterity?” Pick real hobbies, explain what makes them fiddly, and talk about patience and practice. In a practical task, stay calm, follow instructions carefully, and talk through what you are doing.

Ethics questions

Dental ethics questions often involve cosmetic treatment, cost, consent and patients who do not follow advice. Use the same approach as any ethics station: name the issue, gather the facts, weigh the options, decide and justify. Our guide to medical ethics interview questions covers capacity, consent and confidentiality.

NHS dentistry and public health

Be ready to discuss prevention, water fluoridation and access to NHS dental care. You do not need to be an expert. Show that you understand the issue from the patient’s side and can weigh arguments fairly.

Communication and role-play

Anxious patients are a favourite. Slow down, acknowledge the fear, explain options simply and give the patient a sense of control.
