Privacy Policy
What Clarity collects, why it is needed, and what stays under your control.
Last updated 29 September 2026
The short version
- Your practice data lives on your phone. There is no Clarity account in this version, and your progress, scores and history are not stored on our servers.
- Your voice is used to give you feedback, and that is all. Recordings are sent for transcription, and our server does not keep the audio once the transcript comes back.
- No ads, no tracking, no selling your data. We do not sell your recordings or transcripts, use them for advertising, or use them to train our own models.
- You are in control. Erase your data in the app at any time, or delete the app. For the little we hold on our server, just email us.
- Clarity is not for children under 13.
Who we are
Clarity (“we”, “us”) makes the Clarity speaking-practice app for iPhone and Android and runs clarityofspeech.com. This policy explains, in plain English, what happens to your information when you use the app and this website.
Questions or requests about your data: theclaritysupport@gmail.com.
Your microphone
Clarity only uses your microphone when you start a speaking exercise or a live conversation. You can turn microphone access off at any time in your phone’s settings, but speaking exercises will not work without it.
Practice recordings
When you finish a practice recording, it is sent to our server and passed to a speech-recognition provider to produce a transcript with word timings and confidence. Clarity uses that transcript to score your clarity, filler words and pace.
For some exercises, the transcript (not the audio) is also sent to an AI language-model provider to write a short coaching note about what you said.
Our server does not keep the audio after the transcript has been returned.
A copy of your own recordings stays on your phone for up to 30 days so you can replay and compare them. After that it is deleted automatically, or sooner if you erase your data.
Live conversations
In Conversation mode, your speech is streamed to a speech-recognition provider as you talk. The transcript is sent to an AI language-model provider to write your practice partner’s reply, and a text-to-speech provider turns that reply into audio.
After the call, the transcript is sent to an AI language-model provider to produce your feedback, such as what landed and suggested rewrites.
Conversations are fictional practice scenarios. Please do not share sensitive personal information in them, such as health or financial details, passwords, or other people’s private information.
The providers we use
To run these features we use a speech-recognition provider, an AI language-model provider, a text-to-speech provider, our cloud hosting provider and a subscription-management service. They process data on our behalf to provide the service, under their own terms and security practices. Some of them may process data in countries other than your own.
We do not sell your recordings or transcripts, we do not use them for advertising, and we do not use them to train our own models. We also instruct our speech-recognition and text-to-speech provider not to use your audio or transcripts to improve its models.
What stays on your phone
Most of what Clarity knows about you is stored only on your phone, not on our servers. This includes:
- your onboarding answers: first name, age range, what you want to improve, when you practise and how long for
- your progress, scores and lesson history
- the words you save in Wordcraft
- summaries of your past conversations
- your reminder settings
- local crash notes
No account, no sync
This version of Clarity has no user account. Your practice data is not synced to our servers. If you delete the app, that data is removed, and we cannot restore it for you. Restoring a purchase restores access only, not practice history.
What our server keeps
Our server logs operational data only: connection stages, error categories, timings and usage counts. It does not log your audio, transcripts or conversation content.
To enforce fair-use limits on voice features (a daily practice cap and monthly voice minutes), our server keeps a count of the seconds you have used, linked to an anonymous app user ID, not to your name or email address. Before you subscribe, a small daily allowance of practice recordings (enough for the first-day recording) is counted the same way.
A random device identifier is also sent with live conversations and coaching notes to help prevent abuse and apply rate limits. Our hosting provider also uses your connection’s IP address for a moment to slow down abusive bursts of requests; we do not store it.
Subscriptions and payments
Purchases are handled by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We never see your card details.
A subscription-management service receives an anonymous app user ID and your purchase and entitlement status, so the app can unlock and restore paid access. It also receives your answer to “How did you hear about Clarity?” (for example “TikTok” or “Friends or family”), so we can see which channels bring people who find Clarity useful. That is the only onboarding answer that leaves your phone.
Reminders
Practice reminders are scheduled locally on your phone at the time you choose. You can turn them off in Settings at any time.
No ads or tracking
Clarity has no ads and no third-party advertising or tracking SDKs. We do not sell or share your data for advertising, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
Why we use your data
We use your information to provide the features you ask for, to keep the service secure and prevent abuse, and to apply fair-use limits. We do not use it for advertising or to build a profile of you.
Website waitlist
If you join the waitlist on clarityofspeech.com, we store the email address you submit and the date you joined so we can send you updates about Clarity. Your email is accessible to the Clarity site owner and is not used for advertising or sold.
To have your waitlist email removed, contact theclaritysupport@gmail.com. The website waitlist is separate from the app and its on-device practice history.
Your rights and choices
You can erase your on-device data at any time using the erase option in the app, or by deleting the app.
For data held on our server (the anonymous usage count) or the website waitlist, email theclaritysupport@gmail.com to ask us to delete it. Because most of your data stays on your phone, we may hold little or nothing that identifies you.
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, data protection law (the UK GDPR and the GDPR) gives you rights including to access your data, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to or restrict how we use it. You can also complain to a data protection supervisory authority, such as the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
If you are in California or another US state with a similar privacy law, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to ask us to delete it, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising.
Children
Clarity is not intended for anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has used Clarity, contact theclaritysupport@gmail.com and we will delete what we hold.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be presented in the app when appropriate.
